Kirstie Alley is remembered after she died. On Monday, the Emmy-winning actress’s two children, True and Lillie Parker, told the world that she had died of cancer after she turned 71.
As word spread that Alley had died, many famous people paid tribute to her in PEOPLE and on social media. Ted Danson and Rhea Perlman, who were also on Cheers, also told PEOPLE how sad they were.
“I did something I don’t usually do today while I was on a plane. I saw an old episode of the TV show Cheers. It was the episode where Kirstie keeps saying no to Tom Berenger’s marriage proposal, even though she really wants to say yes. Kirsten was really good in it, “Danson said. “She was both sad and very funny when she played a woman who was about to have a nervous breakdown.
She made me laugh when she filmed that scene 30 years ago, and she still makes me laugh today. I heard that Kirstie had died as I got off the plane. I’m so sad and thankful that she made me laugh so many times. I love her children very much. They know that their mother had a golden heart. She will be missed.”
“Kirstie was an interesting and great friend. Her happiness was never-ending. When she joined the cast of Cheers, we became friends almost right away. She liked kids, and so did my kids. We slept over at her house, and she made treasure hunts for us to do.
She had huge Halloween and Easter parties, and everyone on the show’s crew and their families were invited. She wanted everyone to feel like they fit in. She really cared about her children. I’ve never met anyone remotely like her. I’m so glad I got to know her. I will really, really miss her.”
Jamie Lee Curtis, who was also on Scream Queens with Alley, posted a picture of the two of them from the Fox show. Curtis continued by talking about how close they were “She helped me buy Christmas gifts for my family that year. We agreed to disagree on some things, but we still liked and respected each other. Sad news.”
Tim Allen, who was in the 1997 movie For Richer or Poorer with Alley, tweeted “A kind person died in Kristie Alley. Sad, sad news. All of her family needs prayers.” Kelsey Grammer, who worked with Alley on Cheers, told PEOPLE, “I always thought grief for a public figure was a private matter, but I will say I loved her.”
